Bakelit Multi Art Center

Also on the 22nd at 3.30pm!

Bakelit Multi Art Center is a cultural institute in the industrial area of a former spinner factory (Hazai Fésűsfonó és Szövőgyár). The factory worked so intensively from the early 1920s that there was a time when thousands of Cuban women worked there in the frames of a Socialist exchange programme. From that time on there has been rhythm in the buildings. And still there is.

Our institute was founded with the aim of building common future by involving different sorts of arts and the past of the unique location. We try to make our goal come true by presenting contemporary theatre, literature, and dance performances, installations of fine art/applied art, concerts, festivals, and one-of-a-kind events. Bakelit M.A.C. gives the opportunity to learn, create, rehearse and perform for those who come here. Moreover these artists have chance to make an impact not only on their audience, but on each other as well.

As a result we have built multi-functional areas within the industrial buildings, which give us the possibility to use them according to the different unique and specified visions we face every day. That is how we assure the conditions of inspiring study and development.

Our Receptive-Theatre Tender was launched in August 2007, in which we give opportunity to independent, alternative and structure-less theatre and dance collectives. As a result, a great amount of text-based plays, musicals and other performances have made our repertoire more colorful. We welcome and support multiculturalism and talent before reaching the cultural mainstream of Hungary and Budapest. Bakelit is the gate to the city.

Our hostel, FACTORY HOSTEL BUDAPEST, is both the place of calmness and inspiration as there is room for international and Hungarian performers of different sorts of arts to influence each other and to relax together during their learning periods, study camps, rehearsals, workshops, group exhibitions, etc. They can easily tune up to their professional tasks and have a more intensive, personal, long-lasting experience, while their knowledge deepens better as well thanks to the circumstances of the hostel. Bakelit M.A.C. gives the opportunity to students of international art schools and art institutions from any parts of the world to stay, create, rehearse and perform at our place.

Bakelit M.A.C. operates as a contemporary knowledge centre within the international cultural scene, much more than being just the “first factory-theatre of Budapest”, as we started. Inspired by New York-based and Western European initiatives, one of our primary aims is to become part of the international performing arts scene by providing international productions with infrastructure: working space and other facilities. We strive to build European and regional partnerships (e.g. Visegrad countries). Our facilities include 6 rehearsal and performance spaces, equipped with light and sound technique.

During the site visit, international professionals will have an opportunity to visit all facilities (including our hostel) and meet the artists currently working at Bakelit.
